The complete region of Louisiana incorporates around 4,600 square miles (12,000 square km) of inland waters. The capital is Baton Rouge. Louisiana's economy depended fundamentally on farming during the 1700s and 1800s, with cotton as the essential yield in the northern piece of the state and sugarcane the chief harvest in the south. Lumbering started to fill in the last part of the 1800s and stayed a significant piece of the state's economy into the 21st century.
